Staying healthy in Cape Town – 5 places to maintain clean eating whilst away

So you might find my choice of dining fairly contradictory; I’m in a Vegan restaurant for breakfast and I’m chowing down on a steak for dinner. 2 years ago, you wouldn’t have found me within 2 miles of a vegan restaurant but since having to re-vamp my diet to cut out dairy, gluten and sugar, I’ve found that these places tend to cater very well for my annoyingly fussy diet. What I’ve found most surprising however is that these places tend to serve far better tasting food that most normal restaurants and therefore it gives me every reason to over-indulge, not that I ever really need an excuse.

One of the main reasons I had wanted to go to South Africa was due to a number of my friends raving about the food. However, these recommendations were predominantly through their experiences fine dining with menus full of amazing beef/venison/ostrich etc and so I naturally assumed I wouldn’t have many other options that excellent quality meat; I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Here are my top 5 places for healthy maintaining a healthy diet whilst in Cape Town:

Scheckters RAW:

This was somewhere I mainly ate for breakfast and lunch and had such a great range of food, all plant-based and organic. There are a lot of gluten-free and dairy free options which was amazing for me. Even better were the deserts, all sugar free, that I became addicted to!

Location – Sea Point

Favourite meal: vegan scrambled eggs (made with tofu)

Favourite Juice: Kale cleanse

Favourite Smoothie: Cashew King

Favourite Desert: Reece’s Cup (Sugar/Dairy/Gluten Free)

Opening Times – 8am – 8.30pm

Hungry Herbivore

This place is 100% Vegan and has a lot of gluten-free options as well as the all-important sugar-free deserts!! The main restaurant is in the city but they also have a stand at the Mojo market in Sea Point (this has a smaller menu); which meant I ended up eating here a lot!

Location – The City

Favourite meal: The Mexicana

Favourite Juice: Kleanse

Favourite Smoothie: Zesty Greens

Favourite Desert: Raw Vegan Cheesecake

Opening Times – 12pm – 10pm (closed Sunday)

Plant:

As the name suggest, this is a plant-based menu and so all vegetarian/vegan options.  For me, Plant had more variation than any of the other vegan restaurants which was probably why I went there the most. The staff were incredibly friendly and upon my 4th time visiting, they knew my name and pretty much guessed what I would order!

Location – The City

Favourite meal – Quesadillas

Favourite Juice: I can’t remember the name of it!! But it was their green juice, was amazing!

Recommended Desert: Brownies

Opening times – 8am – 10pm

Raw and Roxy

I only ate here twice because I discovered it late on in my stay and after experiencing their vegan lasagne, I wished I had found it sooner. The clue is in the name in terms of their style, everything is raw, plant-based and vegan. Therefore it met my picky criteria of gluten, dairy, sugar free! It is a little more expensive that the others but definitely worth a visit.

Opening times – 10am – 6pm (Mon –
Thurs), 10am – 10pm (Fri), 10am – 5pm (Sat), Closed Sunday

Location – The City (although their website now says they are moving, so maybe look into that before you go!).

Favourite meal – Raw Lasagne

Favourite Juice: I Am Awesome

Favourite Smoothie: Green Smoothie

Favourite Desert: Oreo Cookie

One Juice

Ok so this is more of a juice bar, but for those on a juice cleanse, look no further. There is a never-ending selection of cold-pressed juices and everything I tried combined health with taste to perfection.

Location – Sea Point

Favourite Juice – Red Juice
